Team SW and The Frontier Nation military have vanquished the forces of the World Order Reorganization Front and it appears that the planet is on its way to peace once again. After forming a new Global Coalition, North America and its surrounding countries are prospering, while Europe finds itself reeling from faltering technology and an expenditure of weapon resources. Spotting this weakness, the remaining WORF forces and its superior technology approach European leaders with promises of support and progress. The time for the Frontier Nation's return to battle has come. In case you're wondering, that's the setup for Sammy Studios' continuation of last summer's lukewarm flight title, Lethal Skies. Appropriately named Lethal Skies II, this Asmik Ace-developed trip to the heavens is a huge improvement over the severely deflated installment we played last year. It's faster, tougher, infinitely better looking, and offers several new features and planes in comparison to its predecessor. But is it enough to dethrone the current PlayStation 2 flight king Ace Combat 4? Not quite.

Not to be unfair to Lethal Skies Elite Pilot: Team SW, a lot of initial and final comparisons were made to Namco's jet-fighting game, Ace Combat 4. Before I start though, I would like to formally shorten the name of this game in this review to Lethal Skies. In any air-combat game, there are only a few things that you can grade on it graphically. They are (in no particular order) how well the jet looks, the ground and terrain appearance, the targets (air and land) look and how amazing things look when you blow them up. Lethal Skies does really well on the 'jet look' part. Every jet from the F-14 to the menacing F-22 Raptor are recreated in splendid detail. Every piece of metal looks to be in place, while the wings flex their mighty muscles as payloads of real-enough missiles sit perched under them. When you gun the afterburners on, the throttles light up in extreme heat. The tail and wing rudders react as you turn or brake. These are probably the best jets I've seen in any video game. Period. The targets also look good, with everything from tanks on the ground to tankers in the sea. You can tell what you're shooting at, which I've always liked. If I'm strafing some tanks and troops, I want to be able to see all of that at 400 feet. Probably the only areas where Lethal Skies doesn't look as good as Ace Combat 4 is the terrain and explosions. The previous section describes what is called "negative lightning", because there is the transfer of negative charge from the cloud to the ground. However, not all lightning forms in the negatively charged region under the thunderstorm base. Some lightning originates in the cirrus anvil or upper parts near the top of the thunderstorm, where a high positive charge resides. Lightning that forms in this region follows the same scenario as previously described, but the descending stepped leader will carry a positive charge while its subsequent ground streamers will have a negative charge. These bolts are known as "positive lightning" because there is a net transfer of positive charge from the cloud to the ground. Positive lightning makes up less than 5% of all strikes. However, despite a significantly lower rate of occurrence, positive lightning is particularly dangerous for several reasons. Since it originates in the upper levels of a storm, the amount of air it must burn through to reach the ground usually much greater. Therefore, its electric field typically is much stronger than a negative strike.
