Ken grew up in Santa Maria, California.
His father was an expert mechanic/pilot/heavy machinery operator.
It is through him, he and his brother Jack grew a love of building and repairing automobiles and motorcycles.
They couldn’t afford to get new ones, so they gathered parts from everywhere and built them.
In high school, he was the president of a youth organization, Youth for Christ.
After he graduated from Santa Maria Union High School with the Class of 58, he attended Riverside Baptist College on a basketball scholarship,
which is quite interesting since he did not like basketball.
He spent his career working as a lineman/splicer for phone/cable companies across the country.
He also worked as an engineer for Braden Wench and as an engineer in grounding and bonding specialty at Vandenburg Air Force Base.
Later, he worked his way up to quality control at Contel. He spent a brief time in Hungary as an engineer and instructor for fiberoptics, which were new to Hungary.
Additionally, he also established the telephone museum in Fairfield, Texas. Ken had a long successful career in communications.
In 2005, he retired and devoted time to hobbies such as woodworking using scroll saws, making cabinetry, shooting, bible studies, assisting with rabbit shows, and fishing.
Ken loved Western Movies, especially those with John Wayne. Twice a week, he and his best friend, Bob Courville, enjoyed weekly Western Movie Time.
Family learned not to call on Monday and Friday mornings.
He was famous for his biscuits, which would harden and become a weapon or hockey puck after several hours.
His infamous cooking also included smoked brisket, his 5 lb. meat lovers pizza and his stroganoff, which also weighted 5 lbs.
He had a great sense of fashion that was exhibited in 80 years of wearing overalls.
The most important thing in life to Ken was Christ. After running from God for 35 years, he began his journey back to God in 1994.
He renewed his commitment and dedicated his life to Christ, abandoning every habit that separated him from the love of God. It wasn't an easy transition, but one he was committed to.
He dedicated his life to helping others learn the love and mercy of God.
He felt strongly that if he could be forgiven and used of God, anyone could. At the age of 70, he figured out what God had called him to do, beginning his driving passion and success in prison ministry.
Due to COVID restrictions, in-person prison visits on-site were limited and most cases, eliminated.
To expand the ministry he had been doing, he established a website, "Restored by Christ", to help prisoners and their families with transition back into society.

Albert Richard Bohl, 80, born December 1, 1940 in Santa Maria to Albert Sieferd and Dorothy Rose Bohl passed away in Santa Maria December 26, 2020 of the coronaviris (COVID-19).
Posted on Facebook by Twyla Bohl December 27, 2020.
My heart is breaking as I share this story with all of our family and friends. Al went to heaven today and I know his mother is waiting at the pearly gates to welcome him in.
He was the best friend and husband I could have ever dreamed of.
He was an awesome and loving father to his children; Lori (Terry) Pennikut, Sandra Bohl and Dennis (Jodell) Bohl.
He was very proud of his grandchildren; Jade, Brandan (Juliana), Michael and Jason Bohl and Brittney and Ian Pennikut.
He was going to be a great grandfather for the first time in January 2021 and was very excited for the new family addition.
He was the favorite friend and holiday chef to his step-children; Scharlet (Perry) Marmolejo, Tanna (Keith) Hadick and Shane (Becky) Clement.
Also PaPa to six step-grandchildren; Chad, Caleb (Olivia) and Sarah Marmolejo, Clayton (Lindsey) and Cole (Krisstin) Hadick and Kylie Clement.
He was great grandpa to Eden, River and Lincoln Marmolejo and Rhett and Noah Hadick.
We still had many plans to do things in our future but unfortunately this horrible coronavirus and pneumonia robbed us of our time together.
I thank my family for being with me today as I struggle thru the tears.
I know Al has many friends out there in facebook land that he worked with at the City of Santa Maria, Texaco and Puritan Cooler for many years and played sports with his buddies at Santa Maria High School that remember him fondly.
He didn't want any fanfare, which was typical Al, but in the summer, the Good Lord willing, he will take one last fishing trip with the family on his son-n-law's boat to be scattered at sea.
Rest in Peace my Love. I will miss you forever.
Al Bohl and Shirley Bohl were 1st cousins, both in the Class of 1958

2/06/2019Ralph LeRoy Thomas Jr.
1940 - 2019
Arel's life started as Ralph Leroy Thomas, in Los Angeles, CA on August 27th, 1940 born to Ralph & Iola McCutchen Thomas and
passed away in Reno, Nevada February 2, 2019 at the age of 78.
He lived a true life of entertainment which started at age 4, performing with his father, mother, and sister Ginger, in the "R.L. Thomas & Family Show".
R.C. Heaton wrote about Arel, in 1947~ "Six-year-old R.L. (Don't call me junior) Thomas brought down the house and then proceeded to tear off the roof at the Rotary Club luncheon in the P.R. Inn. Assisted by his father, his mother, and his 12 year old sister, Ginger, the young man demonstrated a variety of drum and song talent that kept the audience in stitches and sent them away complaining of blisters where their palms came together during applause periods".
He continued his pursuit of music his whole life, traveling throughout his childhood up until high school where the family settled in central California and graduating high school @ Santa Maria High in 1958 and then Allen Hancock College in 1960.
He continued on at that point playing with his Father & Mother, until he went out on his own after obtaining a degree in Music Percussion from Sac State in 1965. He continued on performing, forming his own bands. These included, The Arel Thomas Road Show, The Kicks, and finally his solo act, where his focus was mostly piano and his marimba talents; The Arel Thomas show. He traveled all over the country and then found a niche in the Cruise-Lines, touring the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska. He was able to work with Florence Henderson, Kay Ballard, Gene Barry and the Limelights, a highlight of his career. He finished out his career in Seattle, Washington and eventually worked for Prosser Piano in Bellevue, Washington selling and giving piano lessons.
Over the last 6 1/2 years, he was able to spend time with his family, and friends. He would sit back, and take it all in and enjoy his life. None of us had the opportunity to say "Good Bye" to Arel. He just was gone, and the hole that is left, is staggering. He was our bright light. The only consolation we have, is seeing that bright light in his grand-children's eyes. A light that was given to them, as a gift from their grandpa.
He married the love of his life, Kathleen A Spencer, in 1980 in Seattle Washington.
Arel is survived by his wife, Kathy, Daughters Sherri Craig, Staci Tatara, and Kim McLennan, Grandchildren Colton Craig, Connor Craig, Carli Vogl, Danika, McBain, and Cameron Tatara, and Great Grandaughter Cora Craig, his Sister Ginger Cline, and nieces Cheryl Coppin, and Tina Gosmeyer, and numerous great nephews & nieces.
On January 7th, 2019 Ralph wrote this.
"One of the tough steps we go through is watching things disappear or change…
good times is just that… time evolves and we experience the vibrations.
We are at a time where we can look back and smile at being so blessed to have had the love…
the chance to bring smiles to the gift of life.
We have been so lucky.
Enjoy the sadness… it will turn into love and keep going!!
Love and caring is the way.
Just keep going forward…
the light is waiting for all of us!!!”

Cynthia Clark Prewett
1941 - 2015
Cynthia Clark Prewett Glage, long-time resident of Westport, CT., passed away peacefully in her home April 18, 2015. Cynthia was born in Los Angles County, California on February 14, 1941.
Her memory is held tight by three children, five grandchildren, a sister, a growing extended family, and a league of exceptional friends.
It is the belief of at least one of her children that Cynthia, after beating back and humbling cancer for many years, finally took pity on it.
Superb at bridge, a skilled tennis player and a lover of golf, a brilliant cook and an incomparable mother, Cynthia was beloved and admired by family and friends alike.
She taught her children the importance of speaking their minds, but also the value of sometimes holding their tongues.
Although she was not idle, she knew the sublimity of sitting still, the happiness of just being.
"Happy as a clam," she once said when she was stuck in a ski lodge for several days after hurting her shoulder. She said these same words only weeks ago, when she could no longer walk unassisted.
She was loved truly by the late Wolfgang Glage; some would say there is no better recommendation in all the universe than that. Her wisdom and her strength still accompany all those who knew her. She is loved and missed.
She is survived by her sister Linda (husband Otie); her children Senta (husband Chris), Alexander, and Jolina (husband Brett); and her five beautiful grandchildren (Jake, Carolyn, Tessa, Elsa, and Ashlyn).
Donations may be made in Cynthia's memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

John H. Timberlake
1939 - 2000
After many years of searching for John...
we finally found something at ancestry.com indicating that John had lived in Santa Maria all along, and died March 20, 2000.
I first met John at El Camino Jr High when we were class mates in the class of Ms Hunt and Logan.
John marched to a different drummer than the rest of us, but we were always amazed at his space drawings.
John could easily have been Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, Ph.D, from the movie Back to the Future.
The last time I saw John...
I was at the dump, dumping scrap metal, and John was up to his neck in trash... pulling tubes from old TV sets; we exchanged HI's.

John Rudometkin
1940 - 2015
June 6, 1940 - August 4, 2015
John Rudometkin, a record-setting two-time All-American center in the early 1960s who is regarded among USC’s greatest men’s basketball players,
died on Tuesday (Aug. 4) in Newcastle, Calif., of chronic lung disease that was the lingering effect of the cancer he overcame in his 20s. He was 75.
Known as the “Reckless Russian,” Rudometkin played bigger than his 6-6 height.
An All-American first teamer in 1961 and 1962, he set USC career records in points (1,484; the mark stood for 23 years), scoring average (18.8) and rebounding (831).
He still stands seventh on the school’s scoring chart and fourth on the rebounding list.
He helped lead the Trojans to the 1961 conference title (that was the last time USC won an outright league crown).
A 3-year letterman (1960-62), he topped USC in scoring all 3 seasons and was Troy’s team MVP each year.
He twice posted 20-point, 20-rebound games at USC (versus Denver and Wyoming in 1961). He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1962.
Rudometkin was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and his No. 44 USC jersey was retired in 2010.
He went on to play 3 seasons in the NBA with the New York Knicks (1963-65) and San Francisco Warriors (1965).
His basketball career was cut short by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in his chest near his heart and lungs, but after a trying battle he overcame the disease.
His inspirational ordeal led to a book, “Rudo The Reckless Russian,” based on a nickname given to him by USC’s broadcaster at the time, Chick Hearn.
On the lighter side, Rudometkin found a bit part in the 1962 Disney movie “The Absent-Minded Professor.”
He’s one of the basketball players flying around the gym with the chemically-altered “flubber” shoes on.
After basketball, Rudometkin became a real estate investor, a minister and a motivational speaker.
John grew up in Santa Maria, California. When he was 10 he was so enamored with basketball that his mother got him a ball with redemption stamps.
In 1958, his senior year at Santa Maria Union High School, John was the top CIF Basketball player scoring 966 points avering 30.2 points per game.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Carolyn, along with 3 sons, Ron, JD and Nathan, and 4 grandsons.
A memorial service will be held on Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. at Auburn Seventh-day Adventist Church, 12225 Rock Creek Rd., Auburn, Calif., 95602.

02/24/2008Vera Lou Hale

Services will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park in the Chapel of the Oaks on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. under the auspices of the Golden Oak Chapter 128 OES. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Vera Lou's name to the Eastern Star Scholarship Fund or the Alzheimer's Association. Published in the San Jose Mercury News on 2/24/2008.
Because Vera's obituary said nothing about Vera's life, I asked her friend Jean Rubel if she could tell us about Vera.
Here is Jean's note.
Vera Lou and I became friends in the third grade. I was an awkward lump of a child, and she was bright, tidy and organized. I was amazed and grateful that she wanted to have anything at all to do with me.
I learned that Vera Lou wanted to be a nurse when she grew up. She read all the Cherry Ames books and regaled me with stories of operations and diseases that she had read there. At SMUHS she organized a display of nurses' caps, each from a different school of nursing, in the case at the end of the hall where the business classes were located. She adopted school nurse Phyllis Vanoncini as her mentor. For Career Day assignments Vera Lou always produced something like "My Life as a Nurse," but sometime in college her life took a different direction, and she gave up that childhood goal.
Speaking of SMUH, in our junior year Vera Lou won an essay contest, the prize of which was an all-expenses-paid trip to New York and the United Nations. In 1956 that was a big deal. She was gone for two weeks and returned with stories of new friends, new experiences and a new perspective on world affairs. Years later, every time our paths crossed, she mentioned that trip and how much it had meant to her.
Vera Lou attended San Jose State, where she changed her major from pre-nursing to early childhood education. I don't believe she ever taught school. She worked first for the City of San Jose in a mid-level office position. Then she married an officer in SJPD and after a few months became a security guard and undercover officer at Macy's in "shrinkage prevention." She had many stories of shoplifters and the creative ploys they used to steal merchandise.
Can you imagine our prim and proper Vera Lou a security guard? I was amazed when she told me about her job, which she relished. She felt she was striking a blow for the Good Side.
Sadly, the marriage didn't last. Apparently it fell prey to the stress that ruins too many relationships in law enforcement families. There were no children.
A mutual friend introduced Vera Lou to Royce Ford, a master electrician in San Jose. Both were active in Masons/Eastern Star, and according to Vera Lou, they clicked from the beginning. They both belonged to multiple chapters and held offices in all of them. The marriage was a happy one with many shared interests and goals.
Vera Lou and her parents were very close. I know that people in Santa Maria considered them a bit old fashioned, but I was grateful that they included me in their lives. They were warm, caring, conscientious and gracious people, and I miss them all. I visited Royce and Vera Lou in San Jose several times and found that they too lived those values.
As you all know, Vera Lou was smart, really smart. I find it very sad that dementia stole her mind and erased her personality. I noticed her beginning to fade away in the mid-1980s, and she was in care for almost eight years before she died. The world was a better place with her in it, and I shall miss her.

Richard H. 'Dick' Beall
1940 - 2004
Dick was born November 18, 1940 in Santa Maria, California to Berol "Kansas" and Mildred Beall. In 1946, his sister Becky was born.
He attended Main Street Elementary and El Camino Junior High School, and graduated from Santa Maria High in 1958.
As a young boy, Dick's life revolved around sports, especially baseball. In 1953, his little league team was the Western States Champion, finally losing to British Columbia one game shy of the Little League World Series.
In high school he lettered in baseball, basketball, and football, and he played baseball for the semi-pro Santa Maria Indians.
Although he was recruited heavily by the major colleges to play football and baseball, he signed a major league baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds on the night of his graduation in June of 1958. He spent his first summer of pro ball with Visalia of the California League, where he earned Rookie of the Year and AII-Star honors.
In February of 1959, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Anna Mae Barca. Shortly afterwards they left together for Tampa, Florida where Dick attended spring training with the Reds major league club. After spring training, he was assigned to Topeka, Kansas for his second season. The next two baseball seasons, he played in South Carolina with the Columbia Reds of the Southern Association. His final season as a professional ball player was in 1962 in Macon, Georgia where his first daughter Teresa was born.
Dick and his family returned to Santa Maria after the season and he resumed working for Smith Transportation, where he would continue to work for the next 26 years. In 1970, his second daughter Andrea was born.
Although sports was his passion, Dick's favorite role was as a father. Most of his time outside of work was spent with his family—supporting their interests which included 4-H, accordion lessons, dance and sports. He spent several years coaching the Orcutt Express traveling softball team and also gave private hitting lessons to many area athletes
Dick and his family spent many summers camping at the beach andYosemite until they purchased property at Lake Nacimiento in 1973, where they spent many evenings and weekends entertaining family and friends. In recent years, he and Anna Mae built a cabin on the property and they were in the midst of building a large deck overlooking the lake when he passed away.
Dick loved going out to dinner and spending time with his friends and family. He loved all types of music, with a real fondness for country, bluegrass, cajun, and celtic. He also enjoyed cooking at home, attending cooking classes and watching the Food Network. He was a great Santa Maria Style BBQ'er, and no one in the family could match his buttermilk pancakes or potato salad.
As do many young ballplayers, he dreamed of playing in the World Series. While this dream was not realized, Dick was able to attend one. Always an Anaheim Angels fan, recently Dick became a season ticket holder and was in the stands for two World Series games in 2002, rooting his beloved Angels to victory.
Dick was a devoted husband, father, and friend and never lost sight ofwhat was important to him. He loved life, and his interest in living it fully never waned, even as his health deteriorated. The easygoing and good natured man we were all so fortunate to know maintained his sense of humor and gentle spirit, and looked to the future with genuine enthusiasm.
Dick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anna Mae Barca Beall, of Orcutt; daughter, Teresa Beall, of Paradise, Calif.; daughter, Andrea Moriarty of Pasadena, Calif.; and sister, Rebecca Sylvester of Santa Maria.
He was preceded in death by his father, Berol "Kansas" Beall, in 1993, his mother, Mildred, in 1999, and an infant sister, Dixie Gay, in 1939.
The family is deeply grateful for your love, kindness, support and prayers during this time.
Memorial donations may be made in Dick's name to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or a favorite charity.

Marilyn Alma Tally Hawkins born May 15, 1941 and died on November 11, 1999 age 58. Fresno, CA
Hall of Fame Nurses of the San Joaquin Valley A lifetime of care.
Marilyn Tally Hawkins gave 37 years of her life to health care before succumbing to breast cancer in 1999. She grew up in Fresno and Santa Maria, and, according to her parents, Erwin and Audrey Tally, was already, at the age of 4, “very caring and determined to be a nurse,” just like her aunt. She went into the nursing program at CSU Fresno right out of high school, graduating in 1962. She also received a master’s from the University of San Francisco in 1995.
Hawkins began as a surgical scrub nurse, was a junior college nursing instructor, school nurse, and hospital supervisor at Sierra Community Hospital. She was the only nurse on the negotiation team that worked on the merger of University Hospital and Community Medical Center in Fresno, and took nursing leadership to a new level as the first female senior vice president, chief operating officer, and chief nurse executive for Community Medical. In this role, she led the development of the medical program during construction of Community’s downtown regional medical center.
Some of her innovative ideas included pushing for nurses to be at the center of hospital decision-making (before the concept of patient-centered care was a popular model) and developing the short-stay surgery unit. Her own battle with breast cancer led her to improve patient delivery systems, such as the Innerlink model at Sierra.
Highly honored and respected among her peers, Hawkins had a passion for her profession. “She loved nursing and made it a fun job,” her parents say. Lopez adds, “She led with her heart, and looked for leaders with this quality. … You can see a little bit of Marilyn in each employee who worked with her, since she had that level of impact on so many. … From Marilyn’s example, we learned the following: stay true to your values and principles, embrace change, nothing is impossible to achieve, take risks, there is value in teamwork, be there for people, and, finally, you gotta have fun!”

1940 - 1999
Lester Barry Hayes was born on March 6, 1909 in Oakland, California and passed away September 13, 1999 in Santa Maria.
When his mother married Frank P Hayes, Frank adopted Lester.
His mother went by the name of Belle but we believe her name to be Isabella; no last name has been found for who she married
before Frank Hayes or who Lester's biological father might be.
The Hayes family arrived in Santa Maria in 1912 when Frank Hayes was offered a job playing the pipe organ at the Gaiety Theater.
Lester's professional music career began at the age of 16, when he joined a band sponsored jointly by the American Legion and the city of Santa Maria.
Phil Broshe, a local insurance salesman, played both the trumpet and served as the band's leader.
Lester, who played the clarinet, later served as one of the band's leaders for eight years.
After Lester graduated from San Jose State in 1934, he had a problem trying to keep the band together as there just weren't enough old-timers around anymore.
In February of 1941 Lester married Elsie Nunes of Guadalupe in San Jose, California. Lester also adopted Elsie's daughter Marlene at that time.
Always interested in young people, Hayes was instrumental in the founding of the city's Parks and Recreation Department.
Unknown to many people, though, is that Lester's ambition in life didn't include music. "I didn't want to be a musician, I wanted to be involved in athletics," he had said.
But when he had to make a decision, instead of pursuing his preferable career in sports he continued teaching music in schools and doing the musical work
for which he was most famous.
However, while at Santa Maria High School and Santa Maria Junior College he was a track and baseball star and set the record for the 100 yard dash that remained intact for many years.
Lester taught instrumental music at El Camino, as well as at several elementary schools during his long career and he led Santa Maria's Elks' Marching Band.
After his retirement in 1971, Lester took up woodcarving, a hobby in which he became so proficient that he soon began winning awards as being tops in his field.
In July 1999, he was awarded a Meritorious Community Service Award by the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Commission for his many contributions
and efforts on behalf of the youth of the city.
He was a charter member of the Santa Maria Symphony Orchestra and was skilled as a performer on many woodwinds.
He was active in the Boy Scouts and was a merit badge counselor until his retirement.
Lester was a life time member of the Elks Lodge #1538.
He was also a member of the Santa Maria Arts Council, the California Carvers Guild, the Santa Maria Valley Carvers, and the California Retired Teachers Association,
As well as the Santa Maria Valley Pioneer Association and a longtime member of the Santa Maria Country Club and was a former Club Champion.
Lester was survived by his wife Elsie, their daughter Marlene and her husband Tom Dochterman of Nipomo;
grandsons Mike and Rick Dochterman of Santa Barbara and two great-grandchildren Madison and Mason.
Most of this information came Thanks to Shirley Contreras who wrote an excellent article about Lester Hayes which appeared in the Santa Maria Times on August 21, 2016.
